Morwellham Quay is situated at the highest navigable point on the River Tamar and was therefore perfectly placed to serve as a port for the surrounding areas of West Devon and East Cornwall before the coming of the railways.

Like any major port it provided huge amounts of manual and administrative work, in an area previously only sparsley populated. All these new workers needed to live somewhere and the closer the better.

With the coming of the railways (and the decline in mining activity), Morwellham Quay lost its importance and went into sharp decline. By 1900 Morwellham Quay was more or less a ghost town as people moved away to find work elsewhere.
