The "funny hat" was a Corinthian helmet and part of a warrior's equipment up until the early years of the Common Era. The use of it in the depiction of Pericles was Kresilas' (the sculptor) "shorthand" to let people seeing the representation was that pericles was a high ranking military man as well as a statesman.
