Stand off distance
Pirates held onto their pistols better by using a combination of design features and grip techniques. Many pistols had larger grips and were often equipped with a flared or textured handle to improve grip stability. Additionally, pirates sometimes wrapped their pistols with cloth or leather for better handling, and they used a technique called “the pinch,” where they would grip the weapon tightly with their fingers while supporting it with their thumb. This ensured better control during rough sea conditions or in the heat of battle.
Pirates used a number of different kinds of weapons. They used a variety of swords, daggers, rifles, pistols, and cannons.

About $50. Low quality, low value pistols
As of August 2011, there are at least three Captain Jack .22 caliber pistols, made by Hopkins & Allen and bearing an 1871 patent date, available on-line for prices ranging from $395 to $500 USD. Precise value would depend on various factors including condition. These pistols are named after the real-life frontiersman Captain Jack Crawford (1847-1917), and NOT related to Captain Jack Sparrow from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies -- though replicas of the Jack Sparrow pistol are also available.
Russian Makarov pistols are bringing $250-$350.
They would use black-powder guns (pistols AND muskets), knives, cutlasses (swords) and cannons. From the lighter side: Anything they could get their hooks on!
