Sailors along time ago thought that the earth was flat because in their day a world being round wouldn't make sense, because they didn't know bout gravity. Their reasons were that if a world was round everything would fall off and the water wouldn't be able to stay were it was because there was nothing to hold it down. It was also very logical because when you look at the ground its flat. We now know about gravity and this answers why the world doesnt fall off into space. We have also seen the world from space and have physical proof it is round, but back then all they had as proof was that the ground is flat on your feet and that being round didnt make sense. I hope this answers your question, ali
The world today, with all its technology, is not the same world it once was. One can communicate with someone thousands of miles away in seconds, whereas it once would have taken months. Communication is at our fingertips, and that is why the world seems to be shrinking.

The sailors in "Rime of the Ancient Mariner" are cursed after the mariner shoots an albatross. They suffer from thirst, starvation, and death until the mariner learns to appreciate and love all of God's creatures, lifting the curse.
He said he actually thought he heard this scream once.
Mermaids are a myth, first heard of 1000 years before Christ. Sailors took them as half fish and half human, and seeing them was bad luck. They were like sirens (another myth) in which when seen sailors were lured to the rocks and their ship would be sunk.Oddly enough, a very unusual looking (and rather ugly) creature that lives around tropical and sub-tropical waters was once mistaken for mermaids. The dugong, also known as the sea cow, is a lumpy-looking, ungainly sea mammal, and when sailors first sighted these creatures, they believed them to be mermaids.
