Christopher Columbus is credited with finding the new world (actually he first saw the Bahamas) at 2 a.m. on October 12, 1492. He did not actually reach the American mainland until his third voyage in 1498. Sir Walter Raleigh was not born until about 1552 (his exact date of birth is not known). Thus Columbus' voyages of the new world predate Raleigh by at least 50 years.
