They didn't. They were captured and sold into slavery, survived a horrid trip to wherever their captors took them, arrived dazed, starved, and shackled, and were sold again. Once at work on their new owner's property, they were kept there through fear, threats against their families, and murder. Many attempted escape, but few managed it.
If someone were to stand up for their master, they would probably wan them to fight in their place instead of themselves.

As far as helping slaves themselves it wasn't, it was for the sake of the union, industrialism and the view of america, the world helped get the slaves freed.
