The slave trade
From the 1500s to the mid-1800s, many Africans were forcibly brought to the West Indies and Central America primarily due to the transatlantic slave trade. European colonial powers needed a labor force for their sugar, tobacco, and cotton plantations, which were highly labor-intensive. Enslaved Africans were seen as a solution to the labor shortage resulting from the decline of Indigenous populations and the high demand for cash crops in Europe. This led to the brutal displacement and forced migration of millions of Africans to these regions.
