Unlike some other battles, Passchendaele had a few hidden dangers. This included many hidden positions on both sides. Along side that, there was mud, in which many soldiers drowned. Heavy artillery also remained a constant, firing down on troops, causing casualties. Because of the heavy mud, troops where slowed down during an advance or "Trip to No-Man's-Land", making them vunerable to machine gun and rifle fire. Hope that helps
