Technically, sharecroppers were not slaves. They did not own land so they borrowed land from rich land owners in return for some of the profit. Sharecroppers could plant what they liked, and basically do what they wanted, just as long as the land owner got his fair share of the profit.
So many sharecroppers lived in poverty because the landlords usually extended the dues of the farmer to outrageous prices, keeping the farmer in an ongoing cycle of poverty.
sharecroppers often owed landlords more than they made at the end of a year.
They were too poor to own land and they needed to work.

They got trapped in a "cycle of poverty" by them now working as sharecroppers because they were still like slaves working for someone else but they would maybe get something here and there if they paid for it or had a credit which sometime they would have to pay off by giving the land owner more crops. BUT, if your crops didn't grow so abundant you would be short and living in a life of debt.
sharecroppers were farmers who rented land and paid a share of each years crop as rented;they did not own the land they worked.

Sharecropping in the South during ReconstructionSharecropping involved renting land and sometimes implements from a landowner, so that a farmer could raise crops. This was not as efficient a system as large slave plantations, but was preferred by many blacks over a return to hired servitude. Unemployed whites also participated in the system.Sharecroppers were charged high interest rates and had to give a portion of their crops to the landowners. This meant that most sharecroppers lived in poverty with little chance to own land or homes of their own.

Poverty means poor, so child poverty is poor children. The movie shows child poverty by showing how the children lived in the slums and the houses they had to live in. The slum showed in the movie is a real slum that real people actually live in, located in India. It is the slum that the child actors live in. It's sad to think people have to live that way.

There is certainly a significant portion who are in the lower class, but there are a large number of middle class Israeli Arabs, so they do not primarily live in poverty.
Sharecropping was common among poor farmers because they lacked the resources to own land and equipment needed for large-scale farming. Landowners provided them with land, seeds, and tools in exchange for a share of the crops produced. This system perpetuated a cycle of debt and poverty for many sharecroppers.
