In France there were 3 estates: the first (the nobility), the clergy (the church representatives estate (the bourgeoisie). The first and second estate did not the monarchy to disappear, they were content with the way the country was reigned, because they benefited the most of the way it was reigned. They had all kinds of privileges, did not have to pay taxes and received huge pensions. But the third estate was the poor bourgeoisie, who didn't have any of those benefits and had to pay up huge amounts of taxes, while the rich were getting richer and the poor poorer.
That is why the third estate rebelled. As the biggest group of inhabitants of France they wanted a say in how the country was ruled because they didn't think it was fair.
