First, Spanish explorers landed at Winyah Bay in 1521. They started a settlement in 1526. French settled near present-day Beaufort in 1562. But, Neither of them didn't last long and died from disease and hunger. Later, English settlers found Charles Towne in 1670 and settled there. They were the first permanent European settlement.
The Charleston (South Carolina) colony was founded by English colonists in 1663. The name Charleston came from the Latin word, Carolus, which means Charles for King Charles the first.

There was no one "founder" of Charleston, SC. What happened was that Charles II of England granted the chartered Province of Carolina to the Lords Proprietors who were his loyal friends. That was in 1663. In 1670, the first settlement was arranged for and committed, and Charles Towne was established by several shiploads of settlers from Bermuda under the govenor William Sayle. They first settled on Charles Towne Landing (Albemarle Point), but after looking around they moved to Oyster Point (the Ashley-Cooper penisula) in 1680
