Some Southern States in the United States (pre-civil war era) wanted to start a new country because the North wouldn't allow slavery and was pushing the anti-slavery concept on the South. So, if the Southern states became a new country, the North couldn't tell them what to do. Of course, they never did actually start a new country because the secession of some states was unreasonable and not justified (according to the North).
The only country with a land border with the southern US is Mexico. However, some other nearby countries are Cuba and the Bahamas.
There is no country to the west of the United States. At some areas, Canada and Mexico borders the US to the west, but they are typically seen as the northern and southern borders respectfully.

There is no answer to that. A country does not have to have a set amount of states to make it a country. Some countries have lots of states and some countries do not have states at all. Some have other kinds of divisions, like provinces. Some small countries have no divisions at all.
No states in the US practice slavery. Some states USED TO but not anymore.

There are no states in my country. But there are some in the USA - in fact they have 50.
There is only one country that begins with an 'O', that is Oman. In the United States there are 3 states that begin with an 'O', that is Oregon, Oklahoma, and Ohio.
