The south was best at agriculture. There were huge tracts of land on which sugar cane and cotton were grown. To this end, they remained agricultural longer than the northern states did.

The South did what it was good at, but in the last few decades, the South has become more industrialized and urban, attracting numerous national and international migrants. The American South is among the fastest-growing areas in the United States.

Large Governments are bad for growth To what extent does empirical evidence support this Is the South African government abnormally large or should its role be increased?

well that really depends on the efficiency of a particular government,we may say that a large government is not good for growth because it grows and gets to a point of inefficiency. But on the other hand as one person posted that a large government is not good because people move from rural areas to urban areas to seek employment and a better life because government does not promote the agricultural sector in those areas where land is enough, well I can argue that the reason why people from the rurals move is because of the lack or lesser quantity of government representatives representing their areas. Individuals have a tendency to try and empower their own people,be it in churches, companies and even in politics, consider BEE for examlpe-how many people have really benefited from it? further look at the what is happening in Kenya.I personally believe that as long as the government is efficient, its size does not really matter, look at the sizes of the government structures of some of the developed economies-they are ernomous, some genius i don't know said "two heads are better than one", I stand with him or her.WE NEED REASONABLY LARGE ENOUGH GOVERNMENTS. Size of the government does not determine a country's growth it is determined by the country's GDp.

What class benefited from Diaz's dictatorial reign in Mexico?

Upper classes of course. The Porfiriato (1876-1910) was a time period during which Mexico had a rapid economic development at the expense of human rights; especially affected were the field workers (campesinos) and blue-collar workers (obreros) who were exploited without labor rights, and were kept under extreme poverty conditions. Whenever they tried to demand better working conditions, they often "disappeared" or were outright assassinated, sometimes with the help of government forces. The best example of this is the Cananea Strike (1906), where workers of the Cananea copper mine rose up to demand better working conditions, but were shot by Mexican rurals and even American Rangers. The survivors were forced to return to work without any demand being met. These kind of incidents were some of the reasons of the Mexican Revolution (1910-1921).

The different characteristics of rural communities in the Philippines?

I live in a rural place. I love it here, everyone is neighborly and likes to help each other out. It sort of like "you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours". The greatest downfall is that everyone knows you, or thinks they do. You can never go anywhere fast, because everytone wantsd to catch up with gossip. Also is really annoying for teens who are used to the city, and don't know how to entertain themselves. Other than that, the country is amazing, horses, and cows, and oh the scenery! Canoeing, and hiking, the fall colors are phenominal. It's a great place to live!
