Why did stores open so early on Black Friday this year in 2011?

It was basically a vicious cycle due to the fact that all of the stores wanted to stay competitive. One retailer decided to open at midnight and so they all had to. The logic is that if another store opened before they did consumers would go to that store to get the deals. The stores opening later would not get as many customers and would lose out on revenue.
