Caesar and Julia were descended from the lines of Marius and Cinna respectively. Possibly Sulla thought that their union represented a "match" of two of his enemies which he may have found to beoffensive or possibly threatened byany offspring of that marriage. R Martius - Pekin IL
Sulla wanted Caesar to divorce Cornelia because he wanted to unite their families. Sulla would rather have Caesar as a relative, bound to him by family ties, than as a member a family that opposed him. Caesar refused, as you know. However the ironic part of the entire matter is that Caesar's second wife was Sulla's granddaughter.

Julius Caesar's marriage to Cornelia was an arranged marriage within the popularis political faction.
Cornelia Cinna Minor was the daughter of Lucius Cornelius Cinna who was staunch supporter of granting fuller Roman citizenship rights to Rome's Italian allies. This was opposed by the optimates, a conservative political faction which favoured the interests of the aristocracy and, at that time, opposed granting more rights to the Italian allies. Cinna was exiled by the optimates. He allied himself with Gaius Marius, who had also been exiled by the optimates. Marius was the leader of the popularis faction a political faction which championed the cause of the poor, was opposed to the optimates and, at that time, supported the granting of fuller Roman citizenship rights to Rome's Italian allies. The armies of these two men seized power in Rome in 86 BC. Marius died 17 days after this. Cinna became the leader of the popularis and held power in Rome from 86 BC to 84 BC.
Julius Caesar's father was a popularis and the brother-in-law of Gaius Marius. Caesar's marriage to Cornelia was arranged when Cinna was in power. This created a bond between the family of Cinna and that of Marius, which tightened the bonds between two sections of the popularis faction. Whilst Marius championed both the cause of the poor and of the Italian allies, Cinna was focused only on the cause of the Italians.
