The Greeks were professional soldiers.When they were not hired their main source of income was raiding other cities.Fishing and agriculture did not feed their growing population. When they raided the city of Sard and burned down the temple, the people of Sard (in todays Turkey ) relied and asked the king of Persia for retaliation and defense.So Xerexes had to punish the greeks.Thats why he attacked Greece and defeated the union of Spartans and Atheniens in the famous battle of Termopoli
