Prior to the Mexican-American War in 1846-1848, the differences between the two nations (and governments) were not resolved for a number of reasons. The most important seems to have been the growing American desire to gain possession of territory from "sea to shining sea" on the North American continent; that is, many Americans (including President James Polk and his Democratic Party) increasingly had a sense of "manifest destiny" about controlling North America.
