They were fighting for their freedom and their nation( even though it wasn't a nation yet...but they were still loyal to it) They wouldn't just abandon their fellow soldiers and go home, they were gonna battle until they won their freedom, not go home like scared puppies. If they went back to their families, then they wouldn't be protecting their families anymore. They stayed because they were loyal and brave and ready to face anything they had to gain freedom.

∙ 7y agoValley Forge was a training grounds. People like Casimir Pulaski, the Marquis de Lafayette, and most especially Friedrich Wilhelm August Heinrich Ferdinand Steuben worked hard at training these men into the best possible soldiers.
Valley Forge was near Philadelphia which at the time was the capital of the colonists. The British Army had taken over Philadelphia under Maj. Gen. William Howe. Washington needed time to train his troops and wait the winter out.
