JFK found out that the Russians had installed missiles on Cuba. With Cuba only 90 miles from US shores he told the Russians they had to remove the missiles and they refused, so he put a naval blockade on the island. For 3 days we thought there might be a nuclear war between the United States and Russia, but the Russians backed down and removed the missiles. An interesting point to this is the Russian ships still dock in Cuba and their connections with Cuba are still strong.
The blockade of British ports was part of the Continental System put in place by Napoleon in retaliation for the British naval blockade of the coastlines in France. The result of the blockade of British ports was not severe or long-lasting. It hurt Britain to a small degree, but not as much as Napoleon hoped.
During the first nine months of the US Civil War, the Union's blockade of Southern ports was not successful. In the year ending in 1861, nine out of ten ships eluded the Union's efforts. One reason was that the Northern navy simply needed more ships. Union shipyards were busy trying to fix that problem. Union shipyards had the great advantage of being geographically safe from harm. The Rebel army was just too far away.
A blockader is a person who leads a blockade, or a ship which is used in blockading.
Battles that took place prior to 1941 were on mainland China. After 1941, the Pacific Ocean became a NAVAL battleground. US Marine Corps battles for islands were actually naval battles; as US Marines are "naval infantrymen." Some of the US Naval battles were: 1. Sea Battles around the islands of Guadalcanal; these naval fights were the most vicious naval engagements in naval history; especially the "Battle of Friday the 13th." 2. The Battle of the Java Sea; a cruiser fleet action. 3. The Battle of the Coral Sea. 4. The Battle of Midway. 5. The Battle of Leyte Gulf.
This is one battle where a ship actually sunk in the naval action.

The president of the USA, John F. Kennedy, decided to place a naval blockade on Cuba. The Soviet ships carrying missiles to be placed in the nearly finished Cuban missile silos approached the blockade and failed to stop. Eventually, at the last second, the ships turned around, and a deal had been reached between the two superpowers. The USSR removed the missile bases, and the USA agreed not to invade Cuba and to accept communist control of Cuba. In secret, President Kennedy had agreed to remove the American missiles in Turkey, which were providing the same threat to the USSR as to the USA.
Senapati District in the state of Manipur is the place where this controversy has arisen. Actually this district is dominated by the Kukis and the Nagas. The Kukis in their demand for a separate district of Sadar Hill have caused this blockade. In retaliation to this blockade the Nagas have also imposed a parallel blockade in the state of Manipur. The Sadar Hill District Demand Committee is the main organisation behind the blockade representing the Kukis whereas the Nagas are represented by the United Naga Council which has imposed a parallel blockade, thus impairing the state of Manipur.
