The aztecs had 3 calendars and when the two smaller ones where fused it became known as the great sun calendar which kept track of the our galaxy going around the black whole similar to the way the planets orbit the sun in our solar system and in that way important celestial events could be accounted for as well as frequent space travel using the aztec calendar to fly into the sun and travel to any other sun in the galaxy the math done by nassim haramein proved this thus proving albert einsteins theory of the rosen bridge ,as well as newly released hyroglyphs realesd by Mexico in 2012 greatly support this theory as well

to keep track of days. and to know when to harvest, plant, have religious get togethers, and religious festivals. also for just religious things like gods and stuff

They did it because the first emperor wanted it, and threatened to double the sacrifices if they did not build it.

The theory is that it helped with farming. Having a calendar made it easier to sow the fields at the right time to get the best harvest.
