The storming of the Bastille (in French: La Prise de la Bastille), a fortress and prison in Paris, marks the beginning of the French Revolution which leds to the abolition of the privileges of the nobles, and to the adoption of the Republic. This is the National Day in France, as France has no independence to celebrate.
Bastille Day refers to the anniversary day of the storming of the Bastille jail, not to the storming itself.
Bastille Day was first created in July 14, 1790, exactly one year after the storming of the Bastille, but it was meant to be a celebration of the union (federation) of the French people against monarchy, and was called "Fête de la fédération".
