The Middle Ages were very unsanitary and dirty. The streams and rivers were polluted, mice and rats were a constant problem, people didn't wash, and in some places lived in crowded places. Big cities like London and Paris could be smelled before they were seen. In these conditions diseases spread fast and people didn't understand the causes of the disease. They only knew it seemed to take place in the summer months and once it began it went through populations very fast.
