The British landed in Bladensburg,
Md. they fought the militia there and routed the Americans, who fled in what is called "The Bladensburg Races" .The British then marched into the District of Columbia by what is now US1-Rhode Island Avenue. Then when in town the burned the White House and many government as well as private buildings. There were tales of rapes and killings of American loyalists, but much of the paperwork has been lost over the 200 years. Afterwards the British considered marching to Baltimore but cooler minds decided to just sail back down the Northwest branch of the Anacostia
river down to the Potomac and then out to the Chesapeake Bay. Later many of the Washington blockade men and ships were involved in the blockade of Baltimore, Annapolis @ the Severn River,and blockade of the Patuxent
River area. As well asmany other skirmish's and blockades.
