England had to tax the colonist because they had to pay off the French and Indian war debt. England figured that because the colonist had now benefited from the safety and protect of the English military. The colonist wouldn't mind the extra tax one bit... not the case.
It is true that the Stamp Act was the first direct tax levied by England on the colonists. This happened in 1765.
Stamp Act
Colonists could only buy tea from England, and when they did, they had to pay and extra tax on it.
because they were in debt from the war and needed money, so they taxed the colonists.
Because they were extremely high taxes while those who lived in England did not have to pay as much.
Yes it was. It told England that the colonists won't take the tea if they are going to tax them.
England put up taxes to the colonists because King George III needed to pay off some war expenses. The colonists did not want to pay these taxes for they did not to be ruled by England anymore.
Yes. The British government needed help to pay for the French and Indian War which they helped the colonists fight. The colonists should have helped pay for their war. Besides at this time colonists were still British officials. The government had every right to tax them.
The King and Parliament believed they had the right to tax the colonies. Many colonists felt that they should not pay these taxes, because they were passed in England by Parliament, not by their own colonial governments. They protested, saying that these taxes violated their rights as British citizens.
Because it brought in money, even though most of the colonists didn't buy tea from England anymore.
