During the Middle Ages, crusaders joined the various crusades against eastern "infidels" for religious, for economic, and for valorous reasons. Religiously, these conflicts were seen as necessary to uphold and expand Christianity. Economically, these conflicts were (often, if not always) seen as opportunities to gain wealth. In terms of valor, the crusades gave warrior-types an opportunity to demonstrate their courage and fighting-skills in an unusually rare and challenging way.

Some joined for hopes of fame and fortune. Others for religious reasons. Several Popes pushed to have the Holy Lands free of the Arabs.
