In Jesus' own time it says 'the common people heard Him gladly.' This is much the same with Whitefield and also Wesley who later joined him. Whitefield preached in the open air and in houses, wherever anyone would listen. Many people had not also had the gospel preached to them especially the working classes and so were glad of the message.
It is also impossible to explain the profound and lasting effect the revival had on the life of people without attributing it to the work of the Holy Spirit. Many lives were changed for the better at this time and so it was not merely Whitefield's powerful preaching, nor mass hysteria, but an inner work in the heart.
Whitefield's willingness to go anywhere and preach to anyone also meant that many who had not previously been reached with the Gospel heard it. Whitefield also had a powerful voice and is said to have regularly preached to crowds outdoors in excess of 20,000, obviously also making use of natural acoustics.
