Well, when the Roman's took over Greece, they adapted to their culture. Taking things from theirs and mixing it with the Greeks. For example, the Roman took the architecture and mythology from the Greek people. Though while taking the stories and powers of the Greek gods and heroes told in the stories, they changed their names. Zeus became Juiptar. Ares became Mars. Poseidon became Neptune, feared by the Romans, and so on and so forth. This is how the Roman stayed in power of their huge empire for so long. Taking different things from each place they took over, making them feel like they still had some of their old culture. Happy NOT repels.

Most of the Greek gods were representations of forces over which mere humans had little or no control. Aphrodite (Roman Venus) was the goddess of love. The term aphrodisiac, which means a love potion, is a derivative of her name. The Greeks saw love as a kind of madness that overtook the lovers. Aphrodite had many followers, particularly women, who prayed to her and made offerings to her to feel in control of their love-lives. Apparently her priestesses also gave fashion advice and grooming tips.
Most of the time people were afraid of Hades, even afraid to mention his name for fear of attracting his attention and bringing death their way. When people did desire to pray to him they would do so by banging their head on the ground to insure he could hear them. And sometimes they would sacrifice black animals to him.
