The 1956 American flag was changed to incorporate stars for the newly admitted states of Alaska and Hawaii. Prior to this change, the flag had 48 stars to represent the existing states. The addition of Alaska and Hawaii as the 49th and 50th states necessitated the update to the flag design. This change officially took effect on July 4, 1959.
