The IRA derived from the Irish volunteers established in 1913 in direct response to the formation of the ulster volunteers the previous year. The volunteers were then integrated as the military wing of the IRB or the Irish Republican Brotherhood a revoluntionary council that had as its members Eoin o neil, Paraic Pearse, Michael Collins and others.
They Became known as the Irish Republican Army during the Irish War of independence or the tan war between 1919 - 1922 when Ireland declared itself a republic and therefore needed an army.
Following the 1st irish anglo treaty in 1922 there was a split in the ranks of the IRA that spawned the Free staters that went on to become the Irish Army and the Guarda force of today and the Ira was declared an illegal force they continued operations against the partioned north up until 1969 when there was a split in the ranks away from the conservative dublin based offical Ira to set up the Provisonal Ira that was active up until their ceasefire. of course they have been further splits leading to the INLA and the Continuity Ira.
Hope this answers your question on the origins of the ira
