The Korean War is not really over. While the fighting ended, the war officially never has because no peace treaty has been signed.

That would be 60 years as of 2010.

The actual fighting however only lasted 3 years and 1 month.

The korean war lasted so long because of the two powers that were trying to get in on Korea, they were the exact same two countries who had liberated Korea from the Japanise in 1945, the Americans and as they were known then the USSR (Russia).

Russia wanted an all out Communist Korea and America wanted a Democratic society, after 1945 when Korea was liberated, the two sides decided to split the country in two, with the North being controlled by the Russians, with the korean leader being Kim Il Sung and the South being controlled by the American's in which they put Syngman Rhee as head of the south Korean's.

When both counties widthdrew in 1949 they left behind two very different states, in the North a hard core Communist state and in the South a Democractic Republic.

The Korean war lasted so long as both sides wanted to spread their diplomacy, the US did'nt want the Russian's to win as communisum had already spread to China with Moa as the head, and Korea was a small but thought after country, however to the chineese it was the buffer zone.

The US thought that if they let the Communists have their way then Communisum would spread across the world and eventually to them, thus in turn made the Americans not want to give up.

Alternitavly the USSR wanted to spread communisum and were scared that if they did not this would lead to them being isolated and alone much like Germany had become after the first world war.

Another reason it lasted so long was the Nueclar stale mate, both sides had nuclear bombs but neither wanted it to become an all out war.

Both sides wanted korea however during the war of 1950-54 the Americans and Russians ended up pushing each other back and forth pastt he 38th Parrellel.

Thus in turn neither side looked like they were goiing to win so called a Cease fire, july 1953, which still exists today.

The war took so long because both sides were to igotistical and idiotic to let the country work itself out and this is the problem we are still left with today, the example of North Korea in 2008 i belive it was when they wanted to try out a Nuclear bomb on a remote island, however USA threated to invade, but this is unlikley. Korea is still under a cease fire and war could happen at anytime, and unlikley the US, Russia or the Chineese Government will get involved if a war happens.
