The Klan was based on the idea that the United States was founded by WASP's - White, Anglo-Saxon Protestants, and that the dirty foreigners were all Catholics, primarily the Irish and the Italians, but certainly others as well. They looked upon them as superstitious foreigners that owed allegiance to the Italian pope, not the American way of life.
