Pharisees did not associate with pagans or those who were not of their group. Jesus freely associated with people regarded by the society of the day as well as the Pharisees as outcasts - taxcollectors, prostitutes, the poor. Jesus taught love and compassion to the oppressed rather than shunning.

Jesus challenged the Pharisees on their rigid adherance to the letter of the law rather than to the spirit of its intention. They had added so many small legalistic interpretations to the law that the people were burdened by them. The original intent, designed to uplift man, was bypassed by their slavish adherence to the minutiae. Jesus taught that true righteousness originated from the inward spirit, not by adhering to trifling legalism or outward grand gestures.

Answer:

One group of Pharisees who "believed on Jesus" [John 8:30-31] hated Him because "they didn't believe what He said":

"I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill Me, because MY WORD HATH NO PLACE IN YOU." (John 8:37)

"...ye seek to kill Me, a man that hath told you the Truth..." (verse 40).

And before they were done with their heated discussion... their hatred turned to outrage, and they tried to kill Him.

"They took up stones to cast at Him: but Jesus hid Himself, and went out of the Temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by." (verse 59)

How did Jesus feel about the Pharisees?

Jesus appears to have felt considerable kinship with the Pharisees. He spent long hours in synagogues that were dominated by Pharisees, ate meals with Pharisees, and visited Pharisees in their homes. His arguments with Pharisees make up a significant part of the Gospels. The record of Jesus' arguments with the Pharisees in the Gospels and the record of arguments among the Pharisees in the Talmud suggest that Jesus's style of argument, vehemence and occasional name calling (hypocrites!) were typical Phariseeic behavior. It is quite likely that many Pharisees during Jesus' lifetime considered him to be a Pharisee. Most of what Jesus taught in the Gospels is in accordance with the teachings of the school of Rabbi Hillel -- the more humanist and less legalist school of Phariseeic thought.

What did the Pharisees have to do with Jesus death?

The Pharisees and Jesus often clashed-yet they had much in common theologically, and Jesus had many non adversarial contacts with them. At the same time, Jesus rejected the validity of the oral laws of the Pharisees and also their emphasis on ritual purity that made the Pharisees refuse any contact with "sinners." Jesus came with the invitation to all people to enter the kingdom of God, while the Pharisees in effect disinvited all who did not live by the same standards as they. It was especially this exclusivism that Jesus objected to in the Pharisees; by using only standards of external behavior to measure people's relationship with God, they failed to realize that it is what is inside a person that counts, and that they therefore needed God's grace as much as the worst sinner. And it was this external religion that made it very difficult for them to believe in Jesus who did not do all the things the Pharisees felt a religious person should do. Jesus' work stirred up very great hatred in the Pharisees. They said that Jesus was in league with Satan. Despite the problems Jesus had with the Pharisee, it was the Sanhedrin who formally challenged Jesus' authority in the court of the temple (Matthew 11:27-33; Matthew 21:23-27) which later lead to the chief priests and elders of the Jews to plot to seize Jesus in secret and to kill him (Mark 14:1-2, Matthew 26:1-5, Luke 22:1-2).
