Catholic AnswerWhen Martin Luther proved entirely intractable to reason, the Holy Father resorted to the most extreme punishment that the Church has: excommunication. In excommunication, a person is denied all of the sacraments until he repents and recants. M. Luther was so taken up in his sins, primarily sexual, and drinking, that he refused to give up the idea that God wanted him to sin, and he would save him in spite of himself. So the Holy Father excommunicated him and later appointed the Society of Jesus and others (notably St. Francis de Sales and others) to try to bring others to their senses. I'd imagine because of his Heresy he was excommunicated.

The Inquisition intended to stop the spread of heresy. Heresy, basically, covered the adoption, maintaining, and spreading any ideas that were contrary to the authorised teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. This included, but was not limited to, the teachings of Martin Luther and anybody who followed such teachings.
Pope Leo X ordered Luther to stop stirring up trouble. This attempt to keep Luther quiet had the opposite effect. Luther now started issuing statements about other issues. For example, at that time people believed that the Pope was infallible (incapable of error). However, Luther was convinced that Leo X was wrong to sell indulgences. Therefore, Luther argued, the Pope could not possibly be infallible.

Martin Luther King was a strong African American man that believed that everybody should be equal and that segregation and discrimination is wrong and needs to stop.
One idea was that salvation was a gift from God and that it was not good works that saved a person. It was repentance and turning away from sin. Luther was a good man.
It would not stop spreading in space, because of lack of gravity and wind resistance.
