Titanic hit the iceberg because she was sailing at full speed (which was part of maritime protocol at the time) on water that was so calm, it was sailing On a Sea of Glass. Icebergs are typically visible when rough water sloshes against them at the base but there was none that night and it was too late to effectively steer away.
