The Louisiana Purchase was intended to remove France's presence from the territories in the entire center portion of the continental United States. The purchase would also insure free passage on the Mississippi River and trade access to the Port of New Orleans.
Gaining the Louisiana Territory would double the size of the nation at that time and increase settlement of new territory. It would also guarantee American full right to and free passage on the Mississippi river, which was an integral part to trading. US also feared that France was a threat to the nation since France had recently purchased the area from Spain.
The United States wanted that parcel of land to greatly increase the territory it held westward, and especially to control the Port of New Orleans. Napoleon wanted to unload the Louisiana territory because he desperately needed the money at the time. It was the ideal business transaction for both parties, and one of the best land deals the United States government ever made.
