Not because of what today is known as Alaska, but because Russia had claims as far south as Oregon which US Settlers were entering without a prior legitimate claim to the area, These were all cleared by the Alaskan purchase. Russia was out and the US had a Quit Claim to all lands north of what was once called Spanish California and to the north that would be honored by all European Soverigns.
