many runaway slaves were escaping from slave owners in Georgia. slave owners in Georgia were getting mad because their slaves were running away to Florida which were accepted by seminole Indians.

in 1818 president James monroe sent Andrew Jacksonto chase raiding seminoles into Florida but did not have authority to invade Florida, despite his orders Jackson invaded Florida and arrested, tried and executed two british subjects for stearing up 2 Indian attacks.

president monroe sent a blunt message to Spain saying "govern or get out" fearfull of war. Spain decided to leave Florida in 1819 to yield it to the u.s. for 5 million dollars in settlers.
