The United States purchased the Louisiana Territory because it was not in the best interest of the new nation to have a European country--on American soil--so close to its borders. Furthermore, French and Spanish influences lingered in the area due to long standing relations with pioneers, explorers, and missionaries. The French also had control over trading in and along the Mississippi river which was detrimental to American prosperity. Experiencing problems in his "French empire" Napoleon Bonaparte saw fit to sell the land to the Americans (who were eager to buy it) to lessen his engagement in the Americas. Thomas Jefferson's ideology of a nation of farmers also helped to sway his opinion to buy the land despite criticism, in the end it worked out for the best.
