Because the taliban is stupid
Operation Enduring Freedom Took place right after 9/11/2001
Operation Enduring Freedom
The first action was War in Afghanistan, The second was the war in Iraq.
Iraq is a law enforcement function: Restoring law, order and stability to the nation. Afghanistan is associated with law enforcement: Hunting down terrorists and bringing them to justice (dead or alive) due to the September 11, 2001 attack on the US.
The current military campaign (OEF) started October 2001 as a direct result of 9/11.
U.S. Intelligence had long known that the Taliban in Afghanistan harboured and aided Al Qaeda who were responsible for the 9/11 attacks in New York City, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania. Furthermore they knew that Al Qaeda was responsible for previous attacks on U.S. foreign interests, U.S. warships and even targets in the U.S. during the years leading up to 9/11. The U.S. military carried out air strikes previous to our 2002 invasion of Afghanistan during several separate operations all aimed at crippling Al Qaeda operations, destroying training camps and killing leadership including Osama Bin Laden. After 9/11 it was clear that taking down the Taliban government and facilitating a new government in Afghanistan would aid in stabilizing the region (stopping the Taliban from continuing their heinous crimes towards their people) and allow us to carry out large join operations aimed at completely dissolving Al Qaeda, killing any and all members and leaders and completely disrupting their communications network and ability to operate from several locations in the Middle East. In the most simplest of terms, the U.S. took military action in Afghanistan to ensure our national security.
Military enlistments initially increased dramatically after 9-11. As wars in Afghanistan, after Iraq, dragged on, enlistments decreased.
