The early Egyptians settled in the Nile River valley because all the area around the Nile was fertile land and it flooded at the same time every year making it a food source and a calender. They also used the Nile to cook, bathe, clean, fishing, and farming.

It was the only constant source of fresh water. The soil along the Nile was also extremely fertile, and the river supported large numbers of fish, birds and other animals that could supply food. Later in time, it was much easier to move up and down the Nile than it was to walk.
