Almost all of the ancient civilizations could be found along rivers or at least a good source of water. Water was essential for daily living and farming. The Mesopotamian civilizations were along the Euphrates and Tigres, the Egyptian civilization was along the Nile, while the Syrians had their capitol of Antioch on the Orontes River.

Because water is the single most important element to a human being. For any civilisation to flourish, they need water for their crops, for their domestic animals and, of course, for themselves. It is much easier to build your house next to a river than to haul water for miles. Other animals also need water, so it is much easier to hunt them when they come down to drink. The mud near rivers is often full of nutrients which help plants grow strong and it is also cooler near rivers because of the evaporation. If a group of people are constantly struggling for food, they cannot truly develop a culture or a writing system or build vast cities. Thus, the great cultures we hear about today are the ones that built along rivers and had the time and resources to develop.
