They used not only animals but also pictures of things and people, or even parts of people. The letter for the sound we use "D" for was a hand, "B" was a foot, "Q" was a hill, and "T" was a loaf of bread. Why did they use them? Because their word for a hand sounded like "deh", a foot was "beh" and so on. It's the same as if we used a picture of an eye for the sound of the word "I".
