To stop the axis powers from reaching the Suez canal where they would have cut off any supplies to other parts of the world, and of course they would have had captured the oil in the middle east !
Germany and its Axis partner Italy, aimed to cut the Suez Canal route to UK early in WWII. Libya and other parts of N Africa were nominally colonies of Italy, and the Axis were pressing eastwards to threaten Egypt, which controlled the Suez Canal. The Axis landed many troops and reinforcements along the N coast of N Africa, and it was these that the Allied forces eventually evicted.
Well it depends on the north that you are talking about. if you talk about Northern Africa the reason was so that axis powers couldn't take over the Suez Canal and block the goods from reaching different countries in Europe and some parts of Asia.
The Allies fought the Axis powers in the battles of El Alamein in the Second World War. The Allies consisted of forces from the United Kingdom, Australia, India, New Zealand, and Free French forces. The Axis powers were Germany and Italy. The second battle is the more famous as it marked a turning point for the Allies in the western dessert campaign, stopping the Axis from gaining control of the Suez Canal and the middle east oil fields. Montgomery commanded the British 8th Army and Rommel the Panzerarmee Afrika Axis forces in the second battle.
El Alamein
The addition of North Africa prevented the Axis from gaining the suez canal and access to middle-eastern oil.
Axis Powers Hetalia.
The main combatants were: Germany, Japan, and Italy.
The siege of Tobruk and ultimate success of the Australian, British, Polish and Czechoslovakian armed forces in holding off the German and Italian armies had a huge impact. It boosted morale in all those countries, made them proud of their soldiers, and kept the Suez Canal free from Axis control. Had the Axis gained control of this area, supply lines would be cut to the Allies and history would be very different, as the Axis likely would have won the war.
The axis powers were led by Nazi Germany.
