Motte and Bailey castles were needed because the Normans wanted to keep an eye on the village and the make sure they didn't rebel against the king. Motte and bailey castles were very easy to burn down and rotted easily with water.
The bad things about a motte and bailey castle is it is many made out of wood and there for it can easily catch on fire and back then they had something from the Greeks called Greek fire and it can catch wood on fire really fast and it can be burnt down a motte and bailey castle in about 5-10 minutes because they cant put it out with water it can only be put out with urine.

Motte and bailey castles were attacked, by usually using fire, and fire arrows! They used fire because it was easy for the castle to burn down. They would light up the wooden parts of the castle and wait for it to eventually burn down. They could also use pickaxes, becasue in just a matter of days a pickaxe would make a whole through the door if you throught one at it.
