Why was there an attack on Pearl Harbor?

The US had placedembargos on Japan on steel, etc. but mostly oil to try to stop Japanese aggression in China. Because Japan was running out of oil for their factories and war supplies fast they need to look elsewhere, and Southeast Asia had plenty of oil so they wanted to invade there. The US Pacific Fleet was the only thing that could stop the invasion that was launched, so Japan bombed Pearl Harbour in an attempt to destroy this resistance before it could put up a fight.

it happened because it just did happen. Pearl Harbor was an attempt by the Japanese to cripple the United States ability to wage war in the Pacific. The Japanese had plans to expand their empire and the American Pacific Fleet stood in their way.

The US had placed an embargo on Japan in 1940 because of Japan's invasion of China and it's involvement in what would become WW2. Japan was forced, due to its large dependence on American oil, to negotiate with the US. When negotiation stalled and almost came to a complete halt when Japan refused to abandon China, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor.
