Millions of people were unemployed and hopeless. The capitalists and their banker friends responsible for the markets crashing managed to stay comfortable while people who had to labor for a living were left to the mercy of charity and family support. The message of Communism in supporting the working class resonated very strongly. At that point in American history there was no safety net, such as food stamps, welfare, social security. It was a society governed by the law of the jungle, also known as unrestricted capitalism.
