The desert fortress was built by Herod as a place of refuge as he was afraid that Cleopatra might influence Caesar against him.

After the destruction of Jerusalem in 7OAD Masada was the last Jewish stronghold against the Roman invaders. It became the focal point of Jewish resistance to the Romans.

Today it is used as a symbol of Israeli pride. They say "Masada will not fall again!"
