Mexico had several civilizations established on its soil, having relatively high advanced, well-populated societies with cities and culture. On the other hand, most of North America had semi-nomadic tribes that were easily subdued or encroached upon.

On the other hand, Spaniards were fond on having intermixed marriages with Native Americans, resulting in the mestizo race, nowadays the most paramount in Mexico. In the American case, Native Americans were segregated, resulting in the overly European ethnicity that has dominated the US since the 17th century.
