The chief priest, elders, scribes, Pharisees and the Sanherdrin all thought that Jesus was blaspheming by saying that he was the Son of God and God was his Father. Also, they were jealous that Jesus was getting so much fame and attention. Because of this, they stirred up the crowd against when Pilate asked them which prisoner he was to release for the feast of Passover (Jesus, or a revolutionary, Barabbas). The crowd therefore asked for Barabbas to be set free and Jesus to be crucified because of the Pharisees stirring the crowd against Jesus.

See Matthew Chapter 27 for more detail.

They were being whipped up to hysteria by thier priests and rabbis - whose motivations were less than pure.

WHY DID PONTIUS PILATE EXECUTE JESUS?

Pontius Pilate did not want to have Jesus crucified. The Sanhedrin (a Jewish priestly court) accused Jesus of blasphemy in relation to Mosaic Law. Some of its members brought Jesus before Pilates accusing him of sedition against Rome for opposing the payment of taxes and for saying that he was a king. Pilates did not think that Jesus was a threat. He tried to save Jesus by using a custom of releasing one prisoner for Passover (a Jewish festival). He brought Barabbas, a criminal and told the crowd to choose between him and Jesus. The crowd demanded Barabbas to be freed and Jesus to be crucified.

Was barabas a real man?

No..Barabas was not a name but it rather needed to be translated. It is composed of two Hebrew words Bar meaning son and Ab or Abba meaning father. If you translate it would be the son of the father. In the Bible they didn't wanna translated it because it would cause confusion in the mind of the readers and would agree with the Muslims who doubt that Jesus was crucified. According to the Muslims book Jesus was not crucified but saved by God and people were confused as to who was really crucified. Therefore the roman judge Pilot offered the crowd and option between two Jesus..Jesus who were claiming to be king of the Jews and Jesus Barabas or translated as Jesus the son of the Father. The crowd decided that Jesus the King of the Jews be crucified and Jesus the son of the Father was set free. Now u see why they don't wanna translate the name Barabas...
