During this period, there was a common misconception that you could force someone to change their religious beliefs. It was common to threaten a person with the choice of death OR accepting a religious dogma. The Bible teaches that belief only comes through Faith and faith comes from God. In addition to this, fair historical analysis would conclude that there were a number of different motivations behind the crusades. If many people went off to the crusades, it would tend to weaken the power of the nation from which they came and thus make it easier for others to usurp power in those regions.

Many of the crusaders were themselves innocent victims and were exploited, particularly the children's crusade. Those who exploited them had also kept them in darkness about the true kingdom of Christ and the way to win hearts - not by force but by loving persuasion.
